Hector Thomas Maybank Webb (1869-1929) was successful British illustrator who worked for years for Punch and illustrated numerous educational and children books, among which are definitely most known endpapers from Wonder Book series (he used goblins to present certain situation in relation with the title theme - before and after), first editions of Uncle Oojah written by Flo Lancaster (both presented here) and many illustrations of fairy people, used for books and postcards (the illustration below is from Nymphidia - The Court of Faery).
Like always I tried to find at least three interesting facts from life of Thomas Maybank. It wasn't easy, so you'll have to take what I've got:
1. He was injured at eight years, when he fell off the horse. His hip never got well again and he suffered from chronic bone disease for the rest of his life.
2. Thomas Maybank was talented in other artistic areas too. He played cello, piano and several other instruments. He also sang (baritone).
3. He is also a part of elite group of illustrators who signed illustrations for Alice in Wonderland, what puts him next to the immortals like John Tenniel, Arthur Rackham, Brinsley Le Fanu, Peter Newell, Charles Robinson and others.
When I manage to find more about him, I'll add it.
