Leonard Leslie Brooke (1862-1940)


Leslie Brooke or L Leslie Brooke as he signed his works was at his prime on the break of the century. He got his first big jobs when Walter Crane stopped illustrating juvenile fiction by ML Molesworth but the first collection of nursery rhymes edited by Andrew Lang really got him on the top of the list of popular children illustrators.

After that more rhyming books followed and this includes Brooke's biggest hit ever: Johnny Crow's Garden, which Leslie Brooke also written. Johnny Crow was so popular character, he made into two more books, both written and illustrated by Leonard Leslie Brooke.






Leonard Leslie Brooke: Three Little Pigs

After first Johnny Crow's picture book a series of fairy tales (including the scene from Three Little Pigs above) followed and this era roughly ended with the beginning of WW1. Until his death Leslie Brooke illustrated feww more books with nursery rhymes and fairy tales, but he was not so prolific anymore.
When he died entire issue of Journal of America Children's libraries was devoted to Leslie Brooke and his work.
