Walter Crane

Walter Crane (1845-1915)

Walter Crane was son of pretty successful painter Thomas Crane who would probably become much bigger name if had better health.

I can say Walter learned the trade of painting, printing and illustration from earliest age. He worked with Edmund Evans, pioneer of color printing for many years and together they created several series of so called toy books where many classical fairy tales were presented in new light.

Here is a nice example of illustration from Beauty and the Beast:

With Walter Crane illustration for children radically changed and he is probably the most influential illustrator in the history of literature for kids. He believed children really not care too much about realism and enjoy more in two dimensional illustrations with many possible stylisations and images closer to their perception of the world.

Walter Crane was also great designer who's talent shined at most at vignettes where he successfully connected text and illustration into a seamless unity in sometimes in very limited space.

There are many beautiful Walter Crane's illustrations out there, but his masterpiece are probably illustrations from 1882 which are all black and white. Right here we can check most of vignettes and full plates from Grimms' Fairy Tales by Walter Crane.
