Lewis Jesse Bridgman

Lewis Jesse Bridgman (1857-1931) was one of the most prolific painters and illustrators of his time. He was often signed as L. J. Bridgman or simply Bridgman. Let's start with one of his many illustrations for children's books: The Santa Claus Club, published by MM Caldwell from New York and Boston in 1907.

It's hard to find any useful data about his life, but I managed to get at least few facts about L. J. Bridgman:

- He was a son of grain and flour dealer. He was married twice and had four children altogether, three with his first and one with his second wife.

- Bridgman studied at Harvard and soon became skilled in pen and ink, pencil and watercolors. Apart from regular artistic education we should mention his trravels around Europe, where especially Italy impacted his style.

- He spent a lot of time studying US colonial era and was able to recreate many historical scenes from 17th history. His most known works today are painting of Salem in the first half of 17th century.
