Mauritz von Schwind (1804-1871)
This painter and illustrator was born in Vienna, but worked in Germany as well. He achieved first success with decorative paintings of walls in castles, villas and churches and illustrations of almanacs and classic literary works. The painting below is is his portrait of Ruebezahl, mountain spirit from German, Polish and Czech folklore.
Here are some interesting facts from Mauritz von Schwind's life:
- He wasn't famous and successful from always. In his early artistic years he often payed his debts with painting walls and other similar craft projects. His birth town didn't except his talent. He has to move to Munich to make a breakthrough in artistic career.
- Von Schwind was very versatile artist. Apart from being excellent painter and illustrator with many high paid commissions and being appointed professor in Munich, he also designed painted glass (remember Harry Clarke?) and played violin good enough to perform on concerts.
- The signature work of Mauritz von Schwind were romantic scenes from history and mythology with knights, wanderers and mythological characters, what can be seen in series of his paintings based on fairy tales like Seven Ravens, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Juniper Tree, ... While this painter will not be remembered by originality, he excelled with extraordinary sense for details and composition which was often compared with musical symphony.
