Marcus Waterman (1834-1914)
Marcus Waterman was American painter who became famous with his paintings of landscapes of deserts, exotic animals and related scenery from Orient thanks to his travels in Algeria and Egypt. Next illustration offers something completely different:
This is one of five full page color illustrations from Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Snow-Image.
We don't have a lot of information about Marcus Waterman available, but I managed to find few basic points:
He was born in Priovidence, Rode Island, graduated in Browne University (I don't know what was his major and it seems it wasn't related with art, because he supposed to be self thought artist), moved to New York, then Boston, traveled to Europe and North Africa, married native Italian and died in Italy.
Marcus Waterman's biggest quality is probably his usage of colors, which are really lively, full of sun and brightness what can be seen in the winter setting above too.
