Viktor Vasnetsov

Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov (1848-1926) was a son of village priest and grandson of icon painter. His younger brother Appolinry was successful painter too but Viktor was much more famous.

He was specialist for folklore and mythology themed paintings and here we can see his vision of the Sleeping Beauty:

Viktor Vasnetzov got many rewards for his work including medals in World Fair in London. It is very interesting to notice he tried to avoid traditional style and themes at early stages of his career but later became famous exactly for his astonishing sense for details with which he made very special feeling on his most important works, including fairy tales from Russian folklore or collection of brothers Grimm.

His illustrations of fairy tales were not welcomed from the beginning. They gained popularity only later when Vasnetzov turned to religious subjects. He also made frescoes and designed costumes for theater.

For his work tsar Nikolai II gave a noble title to him. One more interesting fact: Viktor Vasnetzov helped to design uniforms for the Red Army!
