Rene Bull (1872-1942)
Illustration from Aladdin (Arabian Nights)
Rene Bull was not only an extremely talented artist, he was also war correspondent and he even got several medals for his services in war zones. Rene was son of Irish father and French mother. He spent most of his youth in France.
At first he studied engineering but his friend Emanuel Poire (famous caricaturist, also known as Caran d'Ache) inspired him to become illustrator and he showed so much talent he soon became one of most popular illustrators.
Magazine Black and White sent Bull into different wars to cover battles as correspondent. He was captured, he traveled a lot, but his most important work is still illustrating and the image above is part of his probably best production: Arabian Nights. He made it in 1912 and this is only one of 24 color plates (different versions of the book used different combinations of the plates).
Rene Bull died in 1942, oficialy employed at Air Ministry in UK.
More of Bull's illustrations (and other authors') from Arabian Nights can be seen here.
