Otto Speckter

Otto Speckter (1807-1871)

Illustration from Puss in Boots and the Marquis of Carabas:

This illustration is from expanded version of Puss in Boots, first published in 1847. Author of this fairy tale, originally written by Charles Perrault is not known and it is also not totally clear who draw what part of which illustration. There are twelve illustrations in the book.

On the front cover Otto Speckter is credited as illustrator, but in the book it is written design by Otto Speckter, drawn on stone by Lewis Haghe.

Lewis Haghe (aka Louis Haghe, 1806-1885) was a top lithographer in those times. He was also trained watercolourist and for more than a decade a president of New Society of Painters in Water Colours.

Because of the technology in book printing in 19th century it seems fair to give credit to both artists.
