John Bauer (1882–1918)
Leap The Elk and Little Princess Cottongrass (also called The story of Skutt the moose and little Princess Tuvstarr) was first published in Among Elves and Trolls, annual publication devoted to Swedish folklore.
Princess Tuvstarr and the Fishpond above is most famous painting by this Swedish painter and illustrator, who is most known by his illustrations of trolls.
John Bauer was born in Jonkoping. His father was owner of charcuterie (he was dealing with prepared meat products and smoking was one of favorite ways to preserve meat before refrigerators), so this was perfect situation for a boy who liked to sketch with charcoal.
Bauer got classical art education at Royal Swedish Academy of Arts but his work is a mix of realism and fantasy. His wife Esther Ellquist studied painting too and was often a model for his works. I can't say if this was the case in the illustration of princess Tuvstarr (Cottongrass).
I can only add this is very said fairy tale, where the girl step by step loses her optimism and innocence until she loses her heart in the lake where she still waits...
