Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894)
Heinrich Hoffmann wasn't illustrator by profession. He was actually pretty successful psychiatrist but he entered the literary history when he wanted to buy a Christmas present to his three old son.
Because he couldn't find a proper book with strong educational note and funny pictures he decided to make it himself. He had some experience from writing satirical pieces and he eventually made really interesting book called Struwwelpeter (Shockheaded Peter).
One of his friends who was a publisher have seen the book and convinced him to publish it for wider audience. The rest is history - Heinrich Hoffmann is official father of picture books!
The illustration above is from his second book called King Nutcracker and the Poor Reinhold. This wasn't so successful and later attempts were even worse. But who cares?
