Francois Chauveau (1613-1676)
This is interesting French illustrator from 17th century who became part of literary history with his engravings.
Francois Chauveau was of noble origin but his family was poor. He was especially talented in engraving and he got a title of royal engraver from Louis XIV.
He made about six thousand engravings for works by many famous contemporaries like Moliere, Racin and La Fontaine.
Chauveau was first illustrator of first six books in the collection of Fables by La Fontaine which were published in several volumes (six plus five plus one). The illustration above is from famous The Fox and the Crow with always always up to date moral: 'Don't trust flatterers!'
I am pretty sure he, dealing daily with nobility in the court, heard a lot of flattery but looking at his work we can say Francois Chauveau was really master of his business.
