Eleanor Vere Boyle

Eleanor Vere Gordon Boyle (1825–1916) or E.V.B. as she was often signed was Victorian painter and illustrator and probably most important female illustrator of the middle of 19th century.

Although she was very talented and she certainly never lacked of commissions she rarely exhibited her work and usually 'masked' her identity with initials for one simple reason. She was married to Richard Cavendish Boyle, son of the Earl of Cork. Richard was rector and queen's chaplain, so painting and especially selling of paintings was considered as inappropriate for his wife.

This illustration by Eleanor Vere Boyle is one of her most known, it is a scene from H. C. Andersen's Thumbelina:

As addition to fairy tails we should mention she also illustrated books of poems and books on gardening. Who knows what she would accomplish if she lived in different social circles?
