Dugald Stewart Walker (1883—1937) was American illustrator who was often compared with Dulac and Rackham because of his sense for details and composition. His probably most important work was illustrating Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales in 1912 but for this post I have chosen less known illustration from Butterfly's Nightmare (Dream Boats and Other Stories) published in 1918:
Richness of details is not so obvious in this illustration but we can't miss interesting ethereal effect made by Walker's signature technique influenced by Impressionism and Art Nouveau. Interesting mix of foggy lines and strong colors, right?
Dugald Stewart Walker wasn't only a painter and illustrator. He also designed bookplates, had written editorial to above mentioned book of Andersen's fairy tales and at least one short story.
Considering his date of death we should know his work is Public Domain in EU based on the 'life + 70 years' rule, but in USA this is true only for works published before 1923.
Here are few examples where both conditions are satisfied:
Fairy tales from H. C. Andersen (1912)
The boy who knew what birds said (1918)
Dream boats and other stories (1918)
Enjoy!
