Charles Bennett

Charles Henry Bennett (1828-1867)

Everybody should be familiar with this famous fable. Illustration of course comes from The Ant and the Grasshopper (Aesop's Fables):

This illustrator from Victorian era is known as one of pioneers of comic illustrations, his works were also published in legendary Punch magazine.

Charles Bennett illustrated several books for children and his own version of Aesop's Fables is probably most famous of all. Unfortunately he died relatively young and poor and his friends had to organize a charity event - a comic opera Cox and Box - to help his widow and children.
