Alice Havers

Alice Mary Havers (1850-1890)

Illustration from The Little Match Girl (H. C. Andersen)

This sad, somehow empty look on the face is typical for the works of Alice Havers, sometimes called Mrs. Morgan (she was married to Fred Morgan, pretty famous painter).

She was pretty successful in her times although her illustrations are maybe too sentimental by today's standards. Her illustration of The White Swans and Other Tales (Hans Christian Andersen) is one of her best creations in the field of kid's literature. The Little Match-Seller (Little Match Girl) above is from this book, published by E. P. Dutton & Co., New York in 1885.

Alice Havers was also very appreciated as a creator of greeting cards. Children and women were her favorite theme. She got several rewards for her paintings in oil and that's about that.

Alice Mary Havers: the almost forgotten name, in my opinion well worth to be remembered!
