William Wallace Denslow

William Wallace Denslow (1856–1915)

William Wallace Denslow was caricaturist and illustrator and he is most known by his illustrations of first edition of Wizard of Oz.

W. W. Denslow as he often signed his work had pretty interesting private life (he married and divorced three times) and with commercial success from the book about Oz he could even afford to buy an island in Bermuda group and crowned himself as King Denslow I. Cool, huh?

For this occasion I have chosen less known illustration from a famous nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty:

W.W. Denslow: Humpty Dumpty

And here are some additional facts about the artist:

1. W. w. Denslow is today known as illustrator, but he was also a great cartoonist, known by his sense of humor, loud lough and notable moustache. He was also a designer of stage costumes and caricaturist.

2. His stylized signature similar to seahorse or hippocampus with first letters of his surname earned him a nick name hippocampus DEN.

3. He led a life of bohemian, with a lot of alcohol, three marriages and many fights, among which the one with Frank Baum is the most famous and probably most influential for his career. If he didn't have so big ego, he would probably illustrated much more than one (first) book about Wizard of Oz. But we'll never know, right?

That's it for today:)
