Thomas Vilhelm Pedersen

Thomas Vilhelm Pedersen (1820–1859)

Vilhelm Pedersen is some sort of official illustrator of Andersen's fairy tales. He was suggested by Hans Christian himself. When Andersen published his first works (they wer mostly self published!), they were without illustrations and when he gained some popularity, publishers decided to republish them with pictures.

Another interesting fact: first illustrated Andersen's fairy tales were published in Germany, not in Denmark. Vilhelm Pedersen was not obvious choice because he wasn't known as illustrator. He was actually a naval officer. But we can see his talent in his drawings and we can only guess about his illustrating career if he wouldn't die so young...

One more fact, although non-related with Pedersen: Princess and the Pea is of Swedish, not Danish origin!
