Johnny Gruelle

Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938)

John Barton Gruelle was American author, illustrator, songwriter and cartoonist from Ilinois, USA. He illustrated several known classic fairy tales and his illustration of Rapunzel is already available all over the internet.

But his major succes was Raggedy Ann. Raggedy Ann was actuall a real doll which his daughter had found and Johnny drawn a face on it. The girl was so pleased with the doll Johnny decided to create (and patent) a Raggedy Ann doll which became major success as a toy produced by Volland Company.

Part of success of the doll goes to the Raggedy Ann Stories (1918) and I decided to present an illustration from this book (this particular story is titled How Raggedy Andy Came):

Well, Raggedy Ann proved to be commercial success and everything was going great until Johnny's daughter got vaccination and after reaction died at the age of 13 years.

Johnny Gruelle never fully recovered after this painful loss and the Raggedy Ann doll was for many years his main consolation. He died in Florida after heart attack.
