Carl Offterdinger

Carl Offterdinger (1829 -1889)

Carl Offterdinger was one of the most popular illustrators in 19th century in Germany. His style is realistic and his initial profession was figure painting. His probably most celebrated work for children was illustrations of Grimms' Fairy Tales.

Among many of his lively and colorful I have chosen Puss in Boots. This fairy tale is not part of Grimms' collection, but it was included in older versions. Being part of French tradition and knowing famous brothers relied on storytellers with family roots in France, this should be no surprise. Wilhelm actually married one of them (Dortchen Wild).

Well, Puss in Boots was eventually excluded from the collection, but we can still enjoy in Offterdinger's work.

Illustration from Puss in Boots

Among other famous books illustrated by this great painter and illustrator from Stuttgart we can add he illustrated collection of juvenlle fiction From North to South, Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, Till Eulenspiegel...

Well, this is it:)
