Randolph Caldecott

Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) is one of the most important children illustrators from Victorian era. His father John Caldecott was accountant and he didn't like Randolph's passion - drawing - which was apparent from his early years.

So Randolph at first got a job at a bank and his hobby was hunting. Later he produced a lot of really great hunting themed drawings but his most influential work is in the field of children's illustration like next one:

Randolph Caldecott illustrated for legendary Punch too but his problems with health didn't give him a chance to produce as much as he could. He died only 40 years old.

There is very important award for illustrators named after him. Caldecott Medal is awarded to American illustrator who made 'the most distinguished picture book' in recent year and is awarded since 1937.
