Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935)
Illustration from Jack and the Beanstalk:
Jessie Wilcox Smith was American illustrator. She worked for magazines and illustrated numerous children books. Less known is fact she initially studied to become a kindergarten teacher.
She seriously started illustrating only when she enrolled in a Howard Pyle's class at the age of 31. Jessie Wilcox Smith was one of his most talented students and was only second woman introduced in Hall of Fame of Society of Illustrators (yes, illustrators also have their hall of fame!).
Her works are still reprinting, not only for nostalgic reasons, but also for her astonishing ability of portraying characters from children's stories. Today her covers of magazines are also appreciated and popular among collectors.
